What Size Parasols Do Customers Actually Buy?

What Size Parasols Do Customers Actually Buy?

Choosing the right parasol seems simple, right? That is, until you start thinking about shape, colour, size and functionality. We often get asked by our customers, "What size parasol do I really need?”

After speaking to our customers throughout the years, we have noticed some key points. Certain sizes sell better than others because they suit typical UK outdoor spaces and garden furniture sets. For us, popularity can also depend on the shape of the parasol canopy.

Let’s take a closer look at how the different parasol sizes compare and which ones are more popular.

The most popular parasol sizes

We have learnt that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to choosing the right size parasol. Every garden is different. However, some sizes are far more popular than others.

3m Square Cantilever Parasol

3m square parasols

Our most popular parasol by far is a 3m square parasol. Square remains the top choice for our customers; they offer clean lines and fits neatly over most garden furniture sets. There are a few key factors that make 3m square parasols the most popular choice:

• They offer more shade than round or rectangular parasols

• Large enough to shade 4-8 guests

• Ideal for most garden dining or sofa sets

• Provides ample shade without overcrowding the space

We have found that our customers favour 3m square cantilever parasols because they offer enough coverage for the average UK patio.

3m x 2m Rectangular Paeasol

3m x 2m rectangular parasols

Rectangular parasols have grown in popularity in recent years. This is because many people opt for larger dining sets, and these tend to be rectangular. 3m x 2m rectangular parasols are popular because they:

• Work well in narrow garden spaces

• Fit above rectangular tables perfectly

• Have clean lines that are favoured in modern gardens

• Create a more balanced feel

Round Cantilever Parasol

3m round parasols

Round parasols remain popular as they appear smaller than their square counterparts. Round garden parasols have a softer and more classic shape that can work in any garden. Round parasols are popular as they:

• Don’t have corners, so they feel smaller and less bulky

• Suit classic outdoor spaces

• Create a more open feeling in your garden

• Are popular for casual seating areas

How to choose the right size parasol

Now we can tell you which sizes are most popular, but it is important to know how to choose the right parasol size for your space. There are a few things to consider before making your choice. Based on our experience, you should consider the size of your furniture and garden space.

Furniture Size

When shopping for your parasol, don’t overlook your garden furniture. After all, this is what you want the parasol to cover.

Many of our customers often overlook the size of the base and how it will fit in with the furniture. Most cantilever parasols come with a large square granite base, which can measure 76cm by 76cm (each base can differ depending on the manufacturer). That’s why you need to consider the size of your garden furniture and where the parasol will sit.

Once you have done that, think about what seating arrangement you have in your garden. Ideally, you would want the parasol to extend beyond the table by around 50cm on all sides. If you have a 6-seat dining set, this would pair well with a 3m parasol, round or rectangular, depending on the shape of your table. Large corner sofa sets need a parasol that measures at least 3m or 3m x 4m; this offers ample shade throughout the day.

Garden Space

It might seem obvious, but space is important. You don’t want to overcrowd your space or choose a parasol that is too small and looks lost. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a large parasol without considering how it will fit or move in your space.

Before choosing a size, you should consider:

• Door clearance - Leave enough space for outward-opening doors

• Fence proximity - You need to be able to open and manoeuvre the parasol

• Trees - Don’t forget about any trees or overhanging branches

• Functionality - Many cantilever parasols tilt and rotate; be sure to allow space for this

Popular canopy colours

We can’t talk about popular parasols without briefly touching on colour. In recent years, colour trends have shifted. We consistently see grey parasols as the most popular colour. When speaking to customers, they feel that grey matches most garden sets and outdoor living spaces. Not only that, but customers tend to prefer grey as it hides marks better than lighter shades. Grey comes in many different shades, but we see anthracite grey continuing to come out on top.

In the last couple of years at Just Parasols, we have seen a rise in the popularity of sand-toned parasols. Lighter tones tend to complement more traditional homes and gardens. Creating a softer feel, as opposed to the dark grey tones that create a bolder feel. Many people like to recreate what they see on holiday as it feels more luxurious and relaxed. Sand coloured parasols go hand in hand with Mediterranean-inspired outdoor spaces.

Does functionality determine popularity?

Yes, functionality influences which parasols are more popular than others. Popularity is usually a mix of factors such as functionality, current trends and price.

Common Functional Factors:

It’s important to choose a shape that works well for your garden. Always choose functionality first and then consider aesthetics. Some things to consider are:

• Usable shade

• Ease of use

• Space needed

• Type of base

Parasol features that our customers care about

Size alone does not determine which parasol you will buy; multiple factors influence this decision. We find that customers want a parasol that is easy to use, looks good, and that will last a long time.

Parasols with LED Lights

Most Popular Parasol Features:

• Easy crank handle opening

• Wheeled granite bases

• Tilting mechanisms

• Rotating mechanisms

• LED lighting

• Fabrics with a high UV rating

• Water-repellent fabrics

Whilst that seems like a long list, it is possible to find parasols that tick all those boxes. Parasols have become a popular outdoor feature; they are no longer viewed as an accessory.

Our advice

Bigger isn’t always better, and that is definitely true with parasols. We often get customers telling us that 3m isn’t big enough for full coverage throughout the day. However, they’re forgetting that parasols can be tilted and rotated as the sun moves.

Speaking with owner Dave Sadler, he says that “the right parasol isn’t about going as big as possible. It’s about choosing a size that genuinely fits how people use their space. In most cases, a 3m parasol will outperform something oversized that looks impressive but becomes impractical day to day.”

Don’t forget to measure not only your garden but also your furniture, and measure where you will place the base. Leave yourself enough room to be able to manoeuvre the parasol, don’t forget the handle to open the parasol will be at the back.

Why the 3m square parasol continues to be the top seller

The clear winner for us is the 3m square parasol. When speaking with customers, we consistently recommend a 3m square parasol. This size offers the perfect balance between usable shade, practicality and versatility.

For us, 3m square parasols continue to dominate sales. It solves the problems that our customers have:

• Enough shade throughout the day

• Suitable for most UK patios

• Stylish and versatile

• Handy features for manoeuvring

We spoke with the owner of Just Parasols, Dave, when asked his view on this, he said, “We’ve seen trends come and go, but the 3m square parasol consistently remains the most popular because it simply works for most people. It gives customers enough shade to genuinely enjoy their garden and avoid the glare of the sun.”

It’s A Good Fit For Most UK Gardens

We have found that 3m square parasols are large enough to provide plenty of shade yet compact enough to avoid overwhelming the space. Many UK gardens do not have the space for a parasol larger than this. However, if you were to go smaller, say a 2m or 2.5m parasol, you don’t get enough shade for you and your guests.

It Works With The Most Popular Furniture Configurations

If you’re buying a parasol, you’re probably buying it to cover an outdoor seating area. The 3m square range is compatible with many different setups. This includes, but is not limited to, 6-seat dining sets, corner sofa sets, large L-shaped sofas and two-seat sofa sets.

Square Parasols Provide More Shade

Square parasols provide more shade than round parasols. The square shape lends itself to effectively providing shade over the corners of furniture. Typically, a 3m square parasol canopy provides shade of approximately 9 square metres. Whereas a 3m round parasol canopy shades around 7 square metres.

Ultimately, the right size parasol is the one that works best for you. You want to create an outdoor space that is comfortable and inviting. Choosing the right size parasol can only enhance your garden.
